EXPLANATION OF TERMINAL MODE

"Terminal Mode" is a function of the communication software where the user can send commands directly to the modem. You can send a variety of commands including the command to dial (ATDT) or the most widely used by Modem vendors Technical Support Staff, the ATi3 command. Many communications programs begin in "Terminal Mode". ProComm, the Windows TERMINAL program, Telix and BitCom for Windows, are just a few that begin in "Terminal Mode". Using BitCom for DOS, you select the "DUMB" record. This is BitCom's "DUMB Terminal Mode". If you see two characters when typing commands in the "Terminal Mode", you can turn off your software's ECHO (using the software's command) or turn of the Modems ECHO with the ATE0 command. It is not important that this be done. You can still send the command and get a response from the Modem. It is just annoying to most people.

QUERYING THE MODEMS FIRMWARE VERSION

1. Use your favorite communications program from the "Terminal Mode".
2. Send the following command by typing the command and pressing ENTER.

    ATI3

    (Apple Tom Indian 3)

Note: If you see two characters for each one typed, read the explanation of Terminal Mode.

    3. The Modem should respond with a line containing the version number.
    4. WRITE THE COMPLETE INFORMATION DOWN!
    5. Use this info to determine what AT Command Manual & Windows 95 driver is for your Model.
    6. Repeat step 2 for the ATi6 command and any other ATi command you want to add.

    USING WINDOWS 95/98's MODEM DIAGNOSTICS

The easiest way to determine the modems responses to the ATi commands is to use Win95/98's built in modem diagnostics. Use the following procedure to get your modems responses:

    1. Start the Control Panel
    2. Double click on Modems
    3. Click on the Diagnostics tab
    4. Click on the Com port the modem is installed on
    5. Click on the More Info button

The ATi commands sent and the modems responses will be displayed in a window.

    USING WINDOWS 95/98's HYPER TERMINAL

To use the Windows 95/98 Hyper Terminal to query the modems "firmware" version, follow the directions below:

    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click on Programs
    3. Click on Accessories
    4. If using Win98, Click on Communications
    5. Click on HyperTerminal to open the HyperTerminal Folder
    6. Double click on HYPERTRM.EXE (to start the Hyper terminal program)
    7. A window will appear asking for a connection name, the name of your new connection does not matter. Type "Test" and either press enter or click on the OK button.
    8. From this Window you can choose either a defined modem or the Com port the modem is using (i.e. COM1,COM2,COM3 or COM4). Select the Modem or the COM port the modem uses.
    9. Type in a fake phone number, only one digit needs to be entered, and either press enter or click on the OK button.
    10. You are now in the connect dialog box. Click on the Cancel button.
    11. You are in the Main Hyper terminal window where you can send commands directly to the modem. Type ATi3 (Apple Tom Identity 3). This command will instruct the modem to respond with the firmware version of the modem.
    12. Repeat step 11 for the ATi6 command and any other ATi command you want to add.
